Before starting a new podcast, it’s worth determining for yourself just how long your runway is.
In other words, how much time and money are you willing to put into this endeavor before you start seeing the results of your efforts.
Consistently producing a podcast is no easy task, and it may be better to pull the plug on the idea before you even begin than to spend the effort launching a show and then realizing you were looking for quicker results.
Podcasting is a long game. I would suggest that you go in committed to at least a year before seeing meaningful results.
Like most things, however, the longer you stick with it, the more the gains compound.
Of course, there’s more to podcasting success than the sheer time investment alone. You need to be clear about who you’re serving and how you do it and you must regularly be running experiments on how to improve both your content and your marketing.
The longer you’re able to invest in running those experiments, honing your message, and narrowing down on your target audience, the greater your chances of achieving your goals.
With an infinite runway, it would only be a matter of time before you landed on something that works, provided you kept experimenting and trying new things.
None of us have an infinite runway, but most people don’t have the patience and stamina to show up consistently for even the one year, two years, or even three years it might take to build a raving fan base.
But if you can, you may well find yourself with more than just an audience. You’ll have a movement.
Every Sunday I send out an exclusive article on how to use podcasting to build an audience and grow your business.
No opt-in, no freebie no bribe. But hopefully a new perspective, encouragement, and maybe even some occasional wisdom. It’s something I’m proud to create and I’d be honoured to share it with you.
