One of the biggest challenges facing you as a podcaster when it comes to growing your show is the limited ability to understand where your downloads are actually coming from.
Sure, most hosting providers offer geographic and even device and operating system data. This is useful in some cases, but what is essential when using the scientific method of marketing to grow your podcast, is to be able to see which promotional channels are actually driving clicks and downloads.
So how do you get this data?
Access Unique Attribution with Chartable SmartLinks
In a nutshell, unique attribution is just a fancy way of describing exactly what we’ve been talking about–having granular data for each platform on which you’re promoting your show.
The easiest way to get this unique attribution is using a tool like SmartLinks from Chartable to create custom links for each of the platforms you use to promote your episodes.
If you typically post your episodes on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and in your newsletter, you would create four SmartLinks for each episode and post one on each channel.
You can then look back at the performance of each link and have a clear understanding of which channels are actually driving not only clicks, but downloads associated with those clicks.
Without this information, you’re left shooting in the dark, guessing what channels are worth investing further time and resources into and which ones aren’t.
With this information, on the other hand, you can clearly see that perhaps posting on Facebook is only bringing back two clicks and zero downloads per episode to your podcast, whereas Twitter, even though you spend less time and attention on it is getting 25 clicks and 15 downloads.
When you understand what’s working and what’s not, you can clearly see which channels you should be doubling down on with your marketing efforts and which channels you should be either tweaking your approach to or abandoning entirely.
Get better data, do better marketing.
Every Sunday I send out an exclusive article on how to use podcasting to build an audience and grow your business.
No opt-in, no freebie no bribe. But hopefully a new perspective, encouragement, and maybe even some occasional wisdom. It’s something I’m proud to create and I’d be honoured to share it with you.
