One of the most important exercises you can ever do for your podcast is to think through and write down who your ideal listener is.
I know, I know, you’ve probably heard this before, but have you actually done it?
It took me three years of running my business before I finally sat down to do the exercise and now that I have, it will be the first thing I do when starting any new endeavor in the future.
You probably have at least a vague idea of who your target listener is, but vague doesn’t cut it when it comes to finding creative ways to get in front of those target listeners with your marketing.
You want to know where your listener shops, what books they read, what other podcasts they listen to, what they complain about when out for drinks with their friends, and a whole lot more.
The clearer the picture you can create, the easier all your future marketing will be.
This exercise is one of the first lessons in Podcast Marketing Academy.
Almost everyone who goes through the program makes some comment about how they had rushed through the exercise in the past, and consistently, this is one of the lessons that delivers the greatest number of lightbulb moments for Academy members.
When you know who your ideal listener is you know how to write your social media captions, which communities to get involved with, which other content creators to collaborate with, which podcasts to guest on, and more.
You literally can’t market effectively without this knowledge.
Sit down and construct the life of your ideal listener down to the finest details. Once you have them created on paper, it simply becomes a matter of finding them and connecting with them in real life.
And by doing this exercise well, you’ve created the roadmap leading you straight to them.
Every Sunday I send out an exclusive article on how to use podcasting to build an audience and grow your business.
No opt-in, no freebie no bribe. But hopefully a new perspective, encouragement, and maybe even some occasional wisdom. It’s something I’m proud to create and I’d be honoured to share it with you.
